How it Started

What’s in a name?

Print and Petal started when two best friends finished university and thought… now what? Hannah and myself (Sarah), were 23 and 22. It was 2015 and we were bursting with inspiration.

Myself - a florist working for one of Auckland’s best, rapidly discovering I LOVED weddings but hated not having the creative control.

Hannah - an award winning graphic designer who wanted more creative freedom.

We knew we had something special to offer the wedding world and initially began as a one-stop-shop for all your visual elements.; from Print to Petal. (One of the other potential names was Print and Pollen but Hannah noted that petal and print both had 5 letters so would look better design wise). We hit the ground running, designing many a wedding for our friends and before we knew it we had bookings for 2016. We attended wedding expos and made piece after piece. I worked four part time jobs, while Hannah worked a very demanding full time job. We both loved Print and Petal but it was becoming more than we could handle with our different schedules and priorities.

By the end of 2016 Hannah decided that her love for design lay more in the corporate/advertising space and departed from P&P. Luckily for us both we managed to navigate this and are still BFFs today.

So that’s why the business is called Print and Petal. Over the years since Hannahs departure I have offered a select retail line that includes many printed items, which helped the name continue to make sense. In 2025, I have closed my retail line (forever? I’m not sure) so that I can focus exclusively on weddings. I do end up offering wedding stationery for one or two weddings a year. Aside from that though, the name is simply that, a name. It holds a special place in my heart, symbolic of how this all started. I have considered changing it, however the name feels so deeply intwined with the business identity that I can’t bear to leave it behind. Who knows, maybe there will be more Print in the future. For now though, my love for wedding flowers is behind every choice I make and I hope Im luckily enough to have many more years in this industry.
